The dependence of the turn-off time, Toff, of a twisted nematic cell on the cell thickness and the chiral dopant concentration has been measured. Toff dropped and the optical bounce disappeared when the cell thickness exceeded p/2, where p is the induced pitch length. Under these conditions a 3π/2 cell was obtained. It appears possible, on the basis of our results, to reduce the temperature dependence of Toff by adding the correct amount of chiral dopant.
