There is an initiative to separate from Kent State University and establish a Canton University or "Canton U" by a proposed levy voted by Canton residents on Feb. 28, 1950. According to the Canton Kent Stater: "The proposed 1.45 mill levy is divided into three parts—.45 mills for books and equipment, .95 mill to cover straight operating expenses and .05 mill to be used for scientific work. The levy will replace the endowment funds which the college lacks, and will cut student tuition expenses in half. With the levy, the average tuition fee is expected to about $160." The levy failed and the school remained a regional campus of Kent State University. Enrollment dipped to 560.
