A failed effort to make the Stark Campus the southern branch of Akron University and the first student to graduate with a bachelor's degree from a Kent State branch campus were highlights for the year. However, the tragic deaths of four students on the Kent Campus who were shot by national guardsmen on May 4 during a protest against the war in Vietnam overshadows other news. It was an event that left a lasting mark on the university and the nation.
