Abstract |
Ohio is ranked in the top 50% of states in regards to food insecurity, and has the highest rate of child poverty among the fifty largest cities in the country. 58,000 students identified as homeless on their financial aid application in 2013. This coupled with anecdotal evidence from Kent State University’s campus motivated our team to partner with the community to educate the public and promote resources to combat hunger and homelessness in the campus population. Through assessment of state and national statistics surrounding hunger and homelessness, community partnerships and collaboration, committee meetings, and guidance from the national campaign, our team was able to plan and execute a successful week of events. We were able to address the SMART goals of interventions through the events of our week and our surveillance methods. We were also able to acknowledge and address our strengths and weaknesses through a SWAT analysis to fully utilize our resources and build our community connections. Though this was only a pilot week for a project that did not yet exist in our community, we were able to execute a successful week of events and are optimistic about next year.
