Comics continue to gain recognition as a unique form in the academy. Thus, it is important to include the voices of comics creators in the conversation, since they can illuminate our understanding of the power comics hold. To do this, Dr. Vera Camden and Dr. Valentino Zullo of Kent State University have conducted and
recorded interviews with well-known cartoonists. This project looks at the challenges of preserving each voice during transcription, as the recordings are transformed into a special issue of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics. It delves into the challenges of conveying both language and feeling, something comics look at as well, and discusses strategies to help transcribers overcome these challenges. It also features images referred to within the interviews.
