The objective of this study was to more clearly delineate fan-athlete relationships. Specifically, we sought to ascertain relationships among fandom, parasocial interaction, and identification with athletes. We asked sports television viewers to rate their levels of fandom, parasocial interaction, and identification with a favorite athlete. We found that those who reported higher levels of fandom were more likely to have parasocial relationships and identify with favorite athletes. Implications of these findings are discussed.
