Abstract

SHE tells the story of three women who are struggling to overcome the obstacles they have faced in a male dominated society. The piece starts with the dancers wearing long, black skirts, which represent the shame they have experienced. As the dance progresses, they remove the restrictive skirts as a metaphor for a new beginning, a newfound freedom. However, because of years of oppression, they continue to struggle to fully realize their self worth and their potential as strong and compassionate individuals. Although there will be obstacles to face, by recognizing their own gifts and abilities as well as their strength as a community, they are able to begin the journey to

liberation and equality.

Modified Abstract

“We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.” -Malala Yousafzai.

SHE, a new work choreographed by Dakota Lindesmith, is a dance that explores the journey of three women struggling to achieve equality in a male dominated society. The dancers represent women coming together to stand for equality. This piece speaks for the movement for a change in the way the world perceives women. Each woman has a right to control their own future.
