Abstract |
In this project, we aim to understand how shift work impacts people with chronic conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus or multiple sclerosis, as compared to people without chronic conditions. Current research efforts have revealed that shift work is a risk factor for developing numerous chronic conditions, and that shift work, in general, leads to dysfunction in cognition as well as an increase in physiological maladies. However, there remains a lack of research regarding how shift work impacts those who already have a chronic condition. We examine differences in objective and subjective cognition, physical symptoms, sleep, and sleep-wake activities between shift workers with chronic conditions and those without.
