Recently, one of us (William) was invited by an ELA teacher to demonstrate reading aloud a complex picturebook to her students in an advanced English Language Arts high school classroom. I read aloud The Visions of Ichabod X (Crew, 2015), an award-winning picture book for adolescents and young adults. The book is a challenging, fictional narrative. It deals with complex relationships between nature and technology, is open-ended, requires inferential thinking beyond the text, expects readers to make sophisticated connections between text and illustrations, and includes multiple layers of meaning.
