Improving Underrepresented Student Representation in Programs Offered by Kent State University's Office of Student ResearchHaving been founded less than four years ago, Kent State University’s Office of Student Research (OSR) is still in the process of raising program awareness among the university’s student body. The OSR’s Director, Ms. Ann Gosky, connected with our six-member Business Consulting and Practicum course group at the beginning of the spring 2020 semester. We were tasked with developing a plan to enable the OSR to more effectively reach underrepresented student demographics – including Latino/a, Hispanic, African American, international, first-generation, low-income, and/or Pell Grant eligible students – with its marketing materials, with the ultimate goal of increasing underrepresented student participation across all OSR programs. Our project consisted of two primary initiatives: 1) networking across the university to create connections through which to market the OSR’s programs to underrepresented demographics; and 2) establishing a future marketing internship position within the OSR that would involve maintaining and building upon our group’s progress with underrepresented student outreach going forward. |
Undergrad Research MarketingWe are graduating Business Management students in the college of business. We are participating in this symposium as a result of our Business Consulting and Practicum course. Our group is working with Ann Gosky and the Department of Research directly to increase their marketing endeavors and awareness of research events and programs. The group is researching marketing solutions and implementing a social media platform to better advertise Undergraduate research opportunities. Another tool we utilized to promote this program was to table at the Beverly J Warren Student Recreational and Wellness Center. Our objective was to attract potential participants and attendees, we promoted the symposium by handing out koozies and lanyards to students. Throughout this experience we have learned how to promote more efficiently and effectively. |
Migration and Test Scores in Ohio
The state of Ohio grades school districts based on how they perform on the state test that can be taken either online or on paper. The method in which the test is taken is supposed to have no actual effect on the result of the test. However, there was a problem that caused those districts who took the test on paper in 2015 to achieve school district ratings of an “A” and those districts who took the test online in 2015 to achieve an “F”. The testing method had no direct relation with school district characteristics such as income, tax rates, or population, so the difference in grades was solely due to test format. The important question is whether these false school ratings caused families to move. This project investigates this question by tracking the location of a household in the base year 2014 and the same household in 2016, the year following the false test score. Using regression analysis with different school and household characteristics along with the school district test score in 2015, this project finds no direct effect of the false school district rating on whether a household moved to a different school district.

Selecting Best-Fit Video Presentation Technology to Enhance Student Learning Experience and Increase Oral Presentation Skills
According to the research, professionalism in oral presentation is one of the critical competencies lacking by recent college graduates. This skill is one of the four top career readiness competencies desired by business managers and executives as cited by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). (NACE, 2019) To support this pressing need, the Advanced Professional Development course, a requirement for all business majors in the College of Business at Kent State University, is designed to help students acquire proficiency in professional presentation skills. Faculty teaching the course want to be able to provide an online video recording tool that can support this learning objective. Working with the lead faculty member, research will be conducted on the most popular available tools and make a recommendation of the one most suitable tool for this course. The study would encompass three (3) video presentation software applications namely 1) GoReact, 2) Kaltura Capture, and 3) Pitch Advantage.
